Empowering Female Leaders: Strategies and Solutions for Achieving Workplace Diversity

Written By Social Impact Lab Japan

"Empowering Female Entrepreneurs: Conversations of Workplace Diversity," held at Social Impact Lab Japan’s Kudanshita office on August 6th, was a resounding success. The event began with an engaging icebreaker, allowing attendees to reflect on influential female figures in their lives, setting the stage for a day of insightful discussions.

The conversation centered around Japan's current gender equality gap, with the 2024 Global Gender Gap Report placing the country at 118th. Participants delved into the biggest barriers to gender inequality at work, highlighting expectations, lack of flexibility, and the challenge of balancing multiple roles.

During our group discussions, we tackled various issues surrounding gender inequality at work. Participants identified major barriers such as societal expectations, inflexible work environments, and the challenge of balancing multiple roles. The lack of mentorship in specific fields was also noted as a long-term obstacle to women’s career advancement.

We explored whether these barriers are more social or institutional, and the consensus was that they encompass both aspects. Attendees shared impactful programs designed to improve gender equality at work, such as flexible check-in/check-out hours to support parents. Asuka Kondo, Design Director at D4V, shared an example from her previous role at McKinsey & Co, where both maternal and paternal leaves were provided, allowing parents to spend time with their families.

The impact of children on work choices was another focal point, with discussions emphasizing that the prospect of having children affects both men and women. Alejandra Niño, Brand Ambassador for CBD and Social Projects, advocated for companies to consider the needs of women regarding childbearing, reduce stigma, and provide supportive opportunities and benefits to help women succeed in both professional and personal realms.

The conversations held at the event mark the beginning of a larger movement towards enhanced gender diversity and leadership empowerment in the workplace. We aim to foster a community dedicated to pursuing gender equality, challenging gender norms, dismantling the stigma surrounding female leaders, involving men in the progress, and developing effective solutions and goals.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions, making the event a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange. A special thank you to our distinguished panelists for their insights and to the volunteer team whose dedication was crucial to the event's success.
